Go to blog Settings, then the Permissions tab. You can then under the Blog Readers section you can invite individuals by sending them an invite email... The Chicas' Blog uses the Blog Authors button but I think you want the button that says "Only people I choose".
Try this.
Also, those you invite actually have to click on the link in the invite to gain access.
